The Success of European Union Companies in Brazil
A census — not a sample — of 25,159 Brazilian companies that ever registered at least one EU-resident shareholder, drawn from the public CNPJ registry of the Brazilian Federal Revenue. 11,583 remain active: a 46% success rate, measured by country, sector, state and investor type. Methodological note
Source: the public CNPJ registry of the Brazilian Federal Revenue (December 2025 extraction), audited CNPJ by CNPJ against the 2024 base. Success rate = active companies ÷ census total. Investor type is defined by the first shareholder of each country registered; companies with shareholders from several EU countries are counted in each country. Retroactive deregistrations by the Federal Revenue (batch inaptness/cancellation) distort annual series, not the cumulative count. Company-level data is available on request — every published figure can be independently verified.
